A wonderful figure of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception or, as she became known, "Virgin of Quito" because of iconography relating to the Book of Revelations on which the "Baroque Immaculadas" were based. Quito Virgins have gilt silver wings and crowns as well as a specific use of color and technique of polychrome, that being the indigo blue robe, with red lining, a white flowered dress, and a painting technique associated with Asian lacquer work called achinado, in which colored glazes over a layer of metallic leaf (silver or gold) create a unique luster in the finished piece.

This piece has gilt silver wings and halo, and Baroque pearl earrings and crown adornment.  Ecuador, 18th century.
